I created this packet for my students to have fun learning the difference between long and short vowel sounds. All of these games can be played individually or as a team. There are blackline masters of each animal if students wish to color their own animal mats. If you would like to make the games a little more challenging, ask the students to identify the syllable type. There are closed, v-C-e, and vowel digraph syllable words included in these games.
Directions: Lay out the two animal mats of the vowels you would like to target. Place the corresponding word cards in a pile. Students are to draw a word and read it correctly on their first attempt. If they read the word correctly, then they are to place the card on the correct animal mat. If they don’t read the word correctly, then they return the card to the card pile.
1. Give the Cat a Cupcake
2. Give the Elephant a Peanut
Since there are few e-C-e words, c-V-V-c words are included.
3. Give the Pig Chip & Dip
4. Give the Dog a Bone
5. Give the Bug a Cup of Juice
