While students are working on Reading Step 2, it is important for them to constantly work on learning sight words. There are sorts of different ways to teach sight words, but here are a few basic tried and proven methods that I have found to work in teaching them.
Overall, my biggest goal is to teach and reteach sight words in fun ways and assess and reassess in order for my students to be successful at learning their sight words.
Below is a glance of 7 sight word assessments that were administered to the same student over the time frame of one year. This same sight word assessment was given over this length of time until the student mastered their sight words. Basically, the assessment was given once very 4-6 weeks. In between these assessment times, the student continually practiced reading the words.
Here is FREE editable copy of a Dolch Word List along with some other free resources. Once I have assessed, I take the time to share with the students what words they have missed, and then I give them a copy so they can practice reading and rereading the sight words until the next assessment. This way when it is time to reassess they will perform better and feel proud that they have learned so many more new words.
