13 Vowel Digraph and Diphthong Booklets

Date: July 12, 2017

A vowel digraph is combination of two vowels that says one of the vowel sounds in the team such as /ea/ says the long –e sound in “eat”.

A diphthong is one unique vowel sound formed by the combination of two vowels. Such diphthongs are /au/, /aw/, /ou/, /ow/, /oi/ /oy/, /oo/. Together these vowel teams create their own unique sounds.

Just a note: The /ow/ vowel team is both a digraph and diphthong. In the digraph /ow/ the long -o talks, and in the diphthong, the /ow/ makes its own unique sound. I just tell the kids that we know /w/ is not a vowel, but it loves to hang out with the vowels.

Students can cut apart these booklets. Then they can staple, color the pictures, and and spell the words. It is helpful to have students circle the vowel team in each word so that they are aware of it.
