Here is an example of the alphabet writing assessments I gave to a certain student over the period of one year. When assessing the criteria was correct letter formation and sequential order of the alphabet. This is the data I collected:
3/3/15 – 3/26 uppercase letters, 0/26 lowercase letters
3/24/15 – 7/26 uppercase, 0/26 lowercase
4/15/15 – 7/26 uppercase, 5/26 lowercase
5/19/15 – 23/26 uppercase, 17/26 lowercase
9/3/15 – 20/26 uppercase, 21/26 lowercase
10/21/15 – 26/26 uppercase, 20/26 lowercase
11/18/15 – 21/26 uppercase, 20/26 lowercase
2/16/16 – 26/26 uppercase, 26/26 lowercase
Also, between assessments, the student wrote the alphabet in their writing journal throughout the week. I assessed the student approximately every four weeks. This specific student took quite a while to master writing the alphabet. Therefore, other students won’t take this length of time to master writing their letters. The key is to stick with it until they have mastered writing their letters. A student who can write their letters are more successful in learning the sounds of their letters. Writing and reading are so closely linked.
